Milford, New Hampshire [13 February 2018] —- Airlift/Tanker Quarterly magazine (A/TQ) just published an article describing the electronic warfare (EW)/electromagnetic spectrum operations (EMSO) gap between the United States and its adversaries. Titled “Denial of Spectrum Denial: The Electronic Warfare Gap that Should Worry Us All”, the article explains the gap, how it came to be, and how the U.S. needs to correct it.

“People need a clear understanding of the risks posed by the EW advancements of other nations,” stated Steve “Tango” Tourangeau, President of Warrior Support Solutions and Lt. Colonel, USAF (retired). “But they also need to think about how addressing the gap will affect just about everything we do in our defense preparations, right down to whether we train for a spectrum-denied engagement.”

Tango’s perspectives in the article are based on a combination of practical experience in combat and current industry knowledge. He begins with mention of the well-known Indiana Jones versus swordsman-in-black fight which demonstrates how one side in combat can find himself unable to even use his weapon when presented with superior capabilities. After a brief discussion of EW/EMSO, he describes spectrum-denial events involving Russia, China and the Middle East. What really gives pause Page | 2 for thought is when he poses questions like can we continue to fly airdrop/airland sorties with crews that are not adequately trained to conduct the mission when GPS is denied? Or, can any of our crews find their way to a refueling point without GPS or air-to-air TACAN? The article also makes clear why the U.S. Air Force has approved its new EW/EMS Superiority ECCT, a study in which the author takes a key role.
